Indifference, Amen
The opposite of love is not hate
The opposite of love is indifference
Indifference to suffering indifference to pain
Indifference to cruelty inflicted so casually and
Unconcerned with the wreckage
What good is misery if it can’t be spread
Blinded by ego, seething with impotent rage
If you hurt they must hurt too but worse so much worse they must suffer now for their sins of long ago
For you cruelty is the point inflicting
All the pain you carry and can’t answer for
You know only that the weak must suffer in your stead and you remain indifferent to their cries of enough it’s never enough
for you
May your indifference haunt you like a spirit seeking not salvation but vengeance
May the indifference you exhibit return as indifference in your children when you reach infirmity
May your children absorb your petty viciousness as a lesson may they believe this is simply what you do to the old frail scared who see only darkness
May you one day and for all the days thereafter feel the cold indifference of unrealized anger
May your days be filled with gnawing regret that cannot be placated with material things
May the emptiness consume you
May the ghosts of cruelties past one day return to collect their bitter dues May the loss of your peace be a heavy price upon your heads
May the world look on, look down upon you with all the weight of your indifference gathered
May all regard you with this same indifference
And may the god you believe in, may the god you believe is on your side
Turn his back to you for all eternity
Amen
